The Iraqi Cement Manufacturers Association Participates in the First International Conference on Carbon Economics in Iraq Based on the invitation extended to the Iraqi Cement Manufacturers Association by the General Company for Carbon Economics, affiliated with the Ministry of Environment, Engineer Ammar Rahim Abdullah Al-Saadi, Chairman of the Association, the Vice Chairman of the Administrative Board and Technical Advisor to the Association, and Chemist Mahmoud Awad, Director of Carbon Emissions Reduction at the French company Lafarge, attended the proceedings and sessions of the First International Conference on Carbon Economics in Iraq. The conference was held on May 21 and 22, 2025, at the Rashid Hotel in Baghdad, under the patronage of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani. The conference was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs, the Minister of Oil, the Minister of Environment and Water Resources, the Governor of the Central Bank, the Prime Minister's Advisor for Technical Affairs, and the Chairman of the Carbon Bonds Committee in Iraq. Dozens of international companies specializing in emissions reduction, carbon bonds, and their trading also participated. The Chairman of the Association gave a presentation on reducing carbon emissions in the cement sector in Iraq and the reduction projects implemented by the member companies of the Association, such as the project to convert combustion systems to gas instead of black oil, the heat recycling project (WHRU), the alternative fuel project (RDF), the TSR, and the production of limestone cement and pozzolanic cement. He also presented the Association’s plan to prepare a carbon map for the cement sector’s emissions in Iraq (Decarbonisation Roadmap). During the conference sessions, it was agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding between the Association and the General Company for Carbon Economics to begin, in the coming days, registering factories that have emission reduction projects and issuing carbon bonds for each factory in preparation for their entry into the global carbon markets through the General Company for Carbon Economics and the specialized international companies contracted with it, so that carbon will be a new financial return for cement factories.
